On June 27, 1861, Henry David Thoreau and his traveling companion arrived in Milwaukee by train.  They stayed one night at the Lake House Hotel on Ferry and Lake Streets, site of today’s 5th Ward Colectivo Coffee.  In the morning they boarded a steamer bound for Mackinac Island where they would botanize for four days.

In 2014, Colectivo is sponsoring the placement of a plaque that honors Thoreau and recognizes his influence on M. Gandhi and M.L. King.

Join us between 2:00 and 4:00 p.m. on Saturday September 27th as we dedicate this plaque and celebrate Thoreau with presentations by poets and musicians at the 5th Ward Colectivo Coffee, 170 S. 1st St., Milwaukee.  See the event poster here attached.
